A true genius, in my book. A man who had his head on straight, and his priorities well sorted. The world needs more people like George Carlin: People who are willing to tell it like it is, other people's sacred cows be damned.
Take some time to watch some of his stand-up routines, and make a promise to yourself to become more outspoken about the things that really matter … other people's sacred cows be damned.

And I had been doing that for the better part of 10 years when it finally dawned on me that I was in the wrong place doing the wrong things for the wrong people."
— George Carlin, 2001, on the 'mainstream' comedy he performed until 1970

George Carlin was a true American treasure. He'll be badly missed. A sad day indeed :(

Way too many good ones…
23rd June 2008 at 1:37 am | permalink |My favourite will always be his routine about how "other people's stuff is shit and your shit is stuff."
Just a guess here alpha, but I'd assume yours would be the infamous "7 words."
Peace be with you George.
23rd June 2008 at 2:29 am | permalink |I was gutted when I read this this morning. He was the last guy standing who could really tell the establishment to fuck off.
23rd June 2008 at 2:53 am | permalink |He was so amazing and so funny. I loved that he was so critical of everything. That above all else he was about questioning everything, not just sitting back and accepting whatever someone tells you. It's a lesson in my own life that has served me well.

23rd June 2008 at 5:42 am | permalink |Even though much of his stand-up only pertained to America,I really liked watching his routines - they had substance and were pretty funny.
A sad day indeed!! R.I.P. George

@everyone else: hear, hear!

He was the last guy standing who could really tell the establishment to fuck off.
Wrong - anyone can do this and many here do!
23rd June 2008 at 3:31 pm | permalink |There was Lenny Bruce and then along came Carlin… Two greats, one soul. Good travels my friend.
23rd June 2008 at 5:53 pm | permalink |What sad news you bring… I was just working through his collection of videos. The world has lost a great amount of objectivity and sillyness. I am sure he will make afterlife a more interesting place.
23rd June 2008 at 10:48 pm | permalink |@Ian: Exactly: Anyone can … and if everyone who wanted to actually did, things would be more likely to change.
@Alvin: Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks and George Carlin. If there's an afterlife, I hope I end up wherever they did. ;-)
@fabrulana: I had a hard time believing it when DavidGX emailed and told me about it. :-(
23rd June 2008 at 11:32 pm | permalink |I have dreaded this day.
I have the DVD boxed set of every live performance he did. The man was ship of reason in a sea of stupidity. We will miss him far more than he'll miss us :)
24th June 2008 at 8:24 am | permalink |Really sad that he's gone…
'How come all your shit is stuff and everyone else's stuff is shit?'
Love that one!
24th June 2008 at 9:44 am | permalink |@Dave A: "We will miss him far more than he'll miss us" hahaha … probably true. ;-)
24th June 2008 at 11:33 am | permalink |What was so good about him is that he didn't swear just to swear. There are so many comedians, and people in general, that will swear every other word for no good reason. It loses its effectiveness. Especially in comedy. If used for emphasis or the topic itself, it keeps its sharpness and pointedness - which makes it very worthwhile.
He will be sorely missed in the comedic world. Not since Richard Pryor's death has a comic passing meant so much to that industry.
24th June 2008 at 2:44 pm | permalink |I have been out of the loop as far as news goes for the past few days and just heard of his death. I think I'm in a bit of shock. I first heard George when I was 13 and I wore out several records playing them constantly. He was such a great man and comedian. I will miss him so much. R.I.P. Mr.Carlin

Yeah, I know what you mean … my friends know I'm genuinely angry if I say "motherfuck" instead of plain ol' fuck. ;-) Damnm, I'm so fucking feminine. hehehe
@Badsanta: I still can't quite believe he's gone. The world needs more folks like him.
