my grandfather partisipated in big ww2. he told me that they hated the english, becuase of their arrognance, they hated the germans for envading. but most of all, they hated the english for their arrocance. united states were never mentioned. because they never were there. me old granddad remembered sovjet soldiers rescuing their asses, never us soldiers. US managed to blow up two cities in japan, and then call it even. what a bunch of crap! and that is US behavior.

@bill: Well, judging from the number of US military casualties during WWII (over 400,000), I'd say we must have been doing something more than flying a couple of planes to Japan … but I've no doubt the version of our "heroics" that I heard in school was a wee bit exaggerated. ;-)

  3. bill said:

yes u us soldiers did alot, but to take credit for winning ww2, is like bragging bout creatin' the air we breed, it's just not true.

  4. alphabitch said:

@bill: Oh absolutely. Saying we "won" the war for everyone is utter crap. :-)

I felt the need to correct some of my drunken postings on this site. I make it sound like I hate America. That’s not true. Actually I love your country and the people. It’s just that some of your fucking politicians scare the crap out of me with the way they behave in the world in terms of playing “world police”, and “America is the land chosen by god”, “the American way is the only way”, and endlessly at war with some poor country etc, etc. Because of statements like that (from bush & co), I really get frustrated because I know what kinds of problems you have internally in terms of countless homeless people, poverty, crime, fucked up health care system etc. So it’s embarrassing, and almost hilarious, listening to people like George Bush and his followers when they open their fucking mouths and spew shit all over us. So it’s kind of a love/hate relationship I have with your complicated, but very beautiful and by all means, great country. (Just to clarify :-))

Hehe, always glad to help, that video was just too damn good to keep to myself ^_^

  9. alphabitch said:

@bill: Nah, I didn't think you hated the US … and I can't blame anyone for being pissed about our gov't. Imagine how it feels living here. ;-)

@sarah: Definitely too good not to share. :-)

@bill: You can criticize a lot of things that the US did and still do after WWII. But the truth is that they saved the world's ass back then. And those that criticize the use of the nuiclear bomb should turn their hate to Japan that refused to surrender after the first bomb.

It's interesting to hear that the "U.S. saved the worlds ass back then." While the U.S. was maintaining a neutral position, the rest of the Allies fought the Germans, by themselves, from 1939 until the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 41. The USSR lost around 6 million men, Great Britain lost about 357,000 and the U.S. lost about 291,000. France lost 201,568. It was the Allies who saved the worlds ass back then, not just the United States.

LMFAO! That is pure genius, love it!

Helen [from the UK but likes the US and most places - aka. ex-nocturna as I am now sick of s/n's]

  13. Bruno said:

@askhelby: I'm not american , so I'm not saying it out of patriotism ( just to be clear).
But, the USSR only entered the war because Hitler broke the agreement they had. If Hitler had left eastern europe for them they would be have been bff with the nazis.
Most of the population of the UK ( with the exception of Churchill) underestimated the danger of Hitler, and the country only acted when they couldn't ignore the problem anymore.
France, with all the respect, is populated by a bunch of pussies.
So I don't hink I'm wrong when I say that the US saved the world's ass.

WWII only taught us one thing - you need to stand up to dictators and empire builders - whereever they are.

My grandfather was in Germany in '36 and the only thing I have difficulty with is that he saluted Hitler as he went past just like all the other sheep. It is that kind of kow-towing to fascists and the like which gives them power - take away the fawning acquiescence to their will and you remove any power they have. (Otherwise I loved my grandfather as being one of the few stable things in my life)

One of the things I love about this site - no one is above criticism. (Though there's a question I always ask myself would I have had the guts to fail to salute Hitler as he went past in that situation in 1936 - hopefully you have a similar question too.)

  15. akshelby said:

Bruno - We could probably go back and forth on this I'm sure. I'd say most of the world underestimated Hitler and only acted when they could not ignore the problem any more. We only acted because of Pearl Harbor. Russia only acted because Hitler broke the agreement. I'd say the U.S. able to do more towards the end of the war because we entered late and had not exhausted our resources, yet. From what I have read of World War II, the Free French were definitely not pussies.

  16. alphabitch said:

@Bruno: "… they saved the world's ass back then."

@akshelby: Indeed, we tried to stay out of it for as long as we could. Then again, the fact that we came in without being beaten to shit towards the end surely helped bolster the Allies who'd already lost so many troops. (haha … was writing all these before you left your last comment, where you say the exact same thing!)

@helen: "aka. ex-nocturna" Damn women, you're confusing! ;-) I'll try to remember this one though.

@Ian: "WWII only taught us one thing - you need to stand up to dictators and empire builders - whereever they are." Indeed. Too bad a hell of a lot of people around the world didn't seem to learn the lesson.

"One of the things I love about this site - no one is above criticism." Thanks … I do try. And yeah, I'm not sure if I would have the guts to not salute either. I do like to think I might have left the country before it was too late … but before I left? I just don't know.

Hahaha! This made me hungry, grrrr, damn you! Not only that, but it made me hungry for Fast Food. The horror! Lovely video though. Made me smile. We should fight with food all the time…it seems a lot funner and less people get hurt. Yay!

  18. alphabitch said:

@aimee: Sorry 'bout the munchies, but yeah, international food fights sound like a much nicer idea than blowing actual people up, doesn't it? heh

  19. Ian said:

I'm not sure I would have had the guts not salute either, when it comes down to it. I just remember that question when I'm in a situation that requires some kind of strength of character.

You could always try failing to stand for the National Anthem (that's if you do stand for you National Anthem) - I've done this on a couple of occasions, just to ensure that I could. It is one of the wierdest feelings you'll get.

  20. alphabitch said:

@ian: I have actually remained seated for the National Anthem … did it for years, in fact (even at a baseball game, of all places … without getting beat up!).

I also failed to stand for the pledge of allegiance in school, way back when, until one of my teachers told me I was being disruptive, and I needed to at least stand, even if I didn't want to say it … so I stood there with my arms at my sides instead. I did appreciate the fact that she didn't try to bully me into actually saying the damn thing.

Not that I'm some big resistance fighter though. If I were face to face with Bush on a Presidential hand-shaking mission (not that I would be, the way he insulates himself from dissenters, but still …), I'm pretty sure my fear of being falsely imprisoned would outweigh my desire to do the "poker face" routine I used to pull during the Pledge. ;-)

  22. bill said:

Bruno, well the us did do a lot in ww2, but saved us all from beastly hitler? I do think other countries had something to do with the outcome of the war back then.
Japan not surrendering after having a city wiped out, full of innocent people? I suspect them for being in shock of the fucking blast, then they witnessed the horror of it all, then i guess they got a “little” bit pissed?.. Surrender when you're pissed? Try asking your woman for peace after you went out and bought a ferrari for the money that was supposed to send the kids to college and remodel the kitchen. just to bring the big issue into small recognizable situations…

    @Bill

It's more like telling her to stop killing your family members after cutting off one of her hands.

Sorry but war isn't like buying crap.

    you didn't see the irony…

  25. alphabitch said:

    @bill: The US is notoriously irony-deficient. ;-)

  29. Bruno said:

@bill: remember that Japan was on the bad guys team. There shouldn't be any doubt about that, but if you are just ask the chinese and koreans or look Unit 731 on the wikipedia.
I also think that chief of states should base their decisions on what is best for their populations and not because they're pissed.
About the US, I think European countries had a lot more responsibilities than the americans, the french for example, betrayed the polish. They had a mutual defense agreement but France did nothing when Poland was invaded by Hitler.

  30. alphabitch said:

    *hands abestar a bucket*

@bruno: Chiefs of State certainly *should* base their decisions on what's best for their population … but they often don't.

And I don't think any country can really bear responsibility for Hitler being a megalomaniacal fruitloop to begin with, whatever happened after he started his rampage.
