McCain: Stupid, scared, or just senile?

By now, any politically active American is well aware that John McCain doesn't know how many houses he owns. True quote, when asked:

"I think — I'll have my staff get to you. It's condominiums where — I'll have them get to you."

Later, his staff said, "at least four." [emphasis mine] Politico dug up eight. Obama's running an ad that says seven. Seems the man has so many fucking houses, nobody can keep track of them all.

This from a man who also doesn't know whether or not condoms help prevent HIV transmission, and has to ask his staff what his position on birth control is.

What's the deal here? I don't think McCain's a moron … is he just so terrified of pissing off the Republican Right that he can't speak for himself? Lord knows THAT'S exactly what I want in a President. Or is he so fucking senile that he can't function independently? Another excellent leadership trait … Or maybe he's just been so fucking rich for so fucking long, he forgot how to do anything for himself?

Either way, I'm thinking he should change the name of his campaign vehicle from the Straight Talk Express to the Amnesia Express.

    Stupid.

    Next question.

  2. Larry said:

I think he is just so desperate to be President that he'd sell his soul to anyone who'd make him be that. It's to the point where he doesn't know what to say without coaching. It's sad that any person could come so low.

That said I also think he is a fucking spineless moron who doesn't know what the hell he is talking about in general. Look at his sunni vs. shiite stupidity.

  3. grizzlybaer said:

I've heard that Reagan was a puppet president, and we all know Cheney was the brains behind Bush/Cheney, and it looks to me like McCain is just a figurehead as well. Is this a trend with Republican presidents/presidential candidates being puppets or figureheads?

  4. Zef said:

I think it was a botched attempt at hiding just how far away from everyday life he is, but he lacked the eloquency (well, to call it eloquency would be lowering standards…) to pull it off and ended up looking like he actually didn't know.

Kind of similar to how messed up he looked (to me at least) when he said 'rich means having a family' and all that crap on the rick warren interview. (same as when he made the $5 mill comment "joke")

I don't think he's stupid, I think he's playing with people (including himself) who think and act kind of similar to a psychopath that's out of practice - they don't realize their act is rusty, and the hilarity of it ends up covering/clouding the underlying malicious intent. (sort of like how crazy funny an evangelist sounds talking about israel, or a neocon talking about america's world destiny - making them pretty much by mistake seem less scary than they are.)

  5. alphabitch said:

@Becca: Well damn, I guess I'll have to think of another one.

@Larry: OK, "spineless moron" is a good compromise between scared and stupid. hehehe

@grizzlybaer: It does seem to be the 'fashion' with 'em these days, doesn't it?

    @Zef: "a psychopath that's out of practice"
LOL … yeah, it's a bit disturbing that they make themselves seem like harmless buffoons instead of megalomaniacal psychopaths.

  6. Kodiakguy said:

This goes out to Larry. Are you fucking shitting me? Obama is back stepping on everything he's promised. Not saying it's right for McCain not to know how many houses he has, but ask him how many bamboo cages he's been in. McCain in my opinion is more for the American people, than a side stepper like Obama!!!

  7. alphabitch said:

@Kodiakguy: Y'know what? I'm about sick of hearing about the POW thing. Being a POW in Vietnam sucked, yes. It was a traumatic and miserable experience for everyone who went through it.

BUT it also happens to have FUCK-ALL to do with being qualified to be President, and it counts for FUCK-ALL "foreign policy experience," and it SHOULD have FUCK-ALL to do with whether or not he gets elected.

  8. Larry said:

@Kodiakguy: Well. This was about McCain. I don't care how many bamboo cages McCain was in, that was many years ago and does not mean you are automatically qualified to be the president. Can you backup any of your claims? Is this just more posturing by the repub types?

  9. grimbles said:

You really think backup, *truth*, has any influence over what comes from the mouth of a McSame lackey?

And yeah, who gives a shit that McCain was a POW. True, it'd be a shitty experience, and no-one should have to go through it. But *all* it is an excuse for is not being able to lift his arms. And that's only because presidents don't really need to be able to lift their arms all that high. It doesn't matter if he has a 'reason' for having an atrocious memory, he has an atrocious memory. And when you're potentially the most powerful person in the world, you do kinda need to be able to remember shit.

If a job required someone to be able to read, and applicant A can't read because they spent their life locked up in a cellar somewhere, its not a matter of "wow, give him the job". It's "shit, that's horrible, but you're not qualified". Maybe Uncle Bobby could bend the rules for little Andy who really wants to work at Bob's Hardware. But this isn't fucking Bob's Hardware, this is the guy who has his finger on the button of the largest nuclear arsenal in the world.

It's not unpatriotic to question McCain's ability. It's not an insult to veterans. It's being realistic. If he's got qualities that would impair his ability to do the job, it's utterly irrelevant where those impairments come from. They're there, they'd impair. Sorry, you're not qualified, collect a fruit basket on the way out.

Also, as ab said, what does being a prisoner do for foreign policy experience. There are plenty of people in the US who've been in local prisons. By the McCain POW/FP logic, we should make one of those criminals minister (or whatever the US name is) for law enforcement. Cos they've been in jail. And… Well, that's about it. Or we could give the trade portfolio to that guy who bought something at a gift shop once. He has experience. I went to a farm once, can I have agriculture?

If anything, Obama has a better claim since he actually lived some of his life in a different culture.

    And isn't senile.

  10. Becca said:

@ KodiakGuy: Let's approach this from a logical perspective. Pretty easy stuff, really. Points will be deducted for any ad hominem or non sequitur responses.

    1. America's economy is in serious crisis. Every credible economist, including Bush's Fed Chairman have all acknowledged this fact. Individual incomes continue to shrink as inflation grows, the costs of real goods is increasing, and energy costs continue to escalate. How does McCain's experience as a POW in Vietnam prepare him to develop an economic recovery plan for America?

    2. Energy, specifically, is becoming an increasingly difficult issue for America. Our demand for energy increases annually, while the technologies providing our energy continue to be based on finite resources. How does McCain's experience as a POW in Vietnam prepare him to foster a cultural climate for the creation of renewable energy?

    3. America's standing abroad has left us increasingly isolated and irrelevant in global affairs. This is due, in large part, to the unilateral and dictatorial foreign policies of George Bush. How does McCain's experience as a POW in Vietnam prepare him to renew and strengthen diplomatic ties with the multiplicity of countries, cultures, and issues facing the global community?

    4. America's response to terrorism has eroded or eliminated our civil liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. How does McCain's experience as a POW in Vietnam prepare him to reaffirm our constitutional guarantees?

  11. Zef said:

I can think of a lot of life stories, be they stories of war or not, a hell of a lot worse than Mccain's "POW horror"; to be honest when it comes to war stories, his sounded almost like a vacation. (hell you'll find worse stories of abuse in regular prisons for crying out loud)

I'm sure it'll make him a valuable advisor for issues relating to war crimes, such as torture and general treatment of prisoners. (oh wait…)

Beyond that, though, it has no meaning. True, pain can give wisdom and true it might make one more 'aware' and contemplating more aspects of ones decision as say - a leader, of some sort. This reflection however requires a fairly highly reflective mind in the first place.

It's not like you by default become wiser, deeper and more thorough just because you've been in a situation like that. Very few do, infact, and they were already exceptional people in the first place.

It's fairly obvious Mccain isn't. To be blunt about it, it doesn't appear as if he has learned ANYTHING from his experience as a prisoner of war (check his actions on, you know, what directly relates to it: treatment of prisoners/his support for bush)

I can't recall where I read it, if it was here or some other site/article; but considering he supports the bush regimes decision to basically redefine what is and isn't torture, and what is and is not a "prisoner of war" and an enemy combatant; by going by what he supports, mccain was not infact mistreated. He was not tortured, and he wasn't "really" a prisoner.

    Funny isn't it.

  12. Larry said:

@zef: I don't think it was a walk in the park for him. To trivialize it so really does a disservice to him, and anyone in that position.

I think he did learn, he has in fact reversed some positions he took. I think this is a case of expediency and greed for power.

  13. Bruno said:

    So
I'd like to hear from you about this Sarah Palin woman. Seems like a huge gamble for McCain and I don't think it'll work.

  14. Mitzi said:

I am trembling with fear that it may be none of the above. The Veep choice is… diabolique.

  15. DavidGX said:

Yeah really.. what a DICK move.. lol…. First thing I thought when I turned on my tv today. I hope Palin and everyone (especially women) realize that he doesn't give a fuck about her.. he wants the publicity and the support from Hillary fans.

He's actually a BIGGER DICK than dubya.. I didn't think it was possible.

Biden is going to do things to this women that are likely mentioned in the violence against women act in a vice presidental debate. I wonder if mccain even thought about that?

  16. DavidGX said:

    woman* rather… I'm half asleep @_@

  17. Mitzi said:

@DavidGX: Biden is going to crush her. I anticipate a teary departure from the podium amid cries of "He's being mean!" Something about her says "I'm a token gesture".

  18. Becca said:

    I smell fear.

Has anyone mentioned to McCain that there are no "do overs"?

  19. alphabitch said:

I'll be goddamned! I didn't think Palin had a chance after she fired the head of the public safety department, and everyone suspected it was because he wouldn't fire her state trooper ex-brother in law (who was, by all accounts, a drunken lout).

She denies that was why, and there's no way of proving it, but it sure didn't look good. heh

@Mitzi: Nah. That's one thing you definitely won't see from Sarah. She's a tough-as-nails Alaskan chick to the core. My god. I think I might actually have to watch the VP debates this year.

Really, given the candidate the Dems had running against her for governor, I'm glad she won. And if Quayle was like a life insurance policy for Bush the First, she's more like a contract on McCain.

  20. asnew2 said:

I'm a 3rd gen alaskan . . . that bitch Sarah Palin is useless. She's a sell out. I live in the town that needs the "bridge to nowhere" . . . we get 5 goddamned cruise ships with up to 10 thousand people a day through the summer . . . it is the third largest city in Alaska . . . it's not "nowhere" for chrissakes!! She's a piece of shit sell out!!!!!

  21. grimbles said:

This is a panic: apparently they're only getting around to looking at Palin's corruption stuff now she's the running mate. Fucking idiots.

  22. Metis said:

    OK… I'm with Bruno…

Talk about this woman no one knows anything about.

First was she the mayor of 6000 or 9000? I think the video clip I saw had her saying 6000 but everything I've read said 9000. That's two more high schools (my school had about 1500 students).

She seems scary as hell- but then all I've come across is media coverage telling me she's the best thing since buttered toast or NOT.

Listening to her speech was totally uninspiring. I felt like I was at a PTA rally and wondered where the bake sale fundraiser was located.

Teresa- be the voice of liberal Alaska and let us know who the heck Palin is.

  23. pedro said:

Well, this Sarah Palin,, I have to admit, she is pretty good looking for a white woman.

  24. Dr. Atomix said:

Alphabitch, sounds like you kinda respect this woman Palin. Everything I've read about her to date indicates she is one of those fundie types - against Roe v Wade, for AK 47 ownership, against environmental responsibility, etc. Also, how on earth is she remotely qualified for the position? I mean, Miss Congenialty, mayor of a small town and governor of a state that has no economic challenges. You have the inside track on this one, so please enlighten us on this seemingly bizaar choice by McSame.

  25. alphabitch said:

@everyone: Alrighty, obligatory "politically-minded Alaskan blogger" Sarah Palin post coming up …

  26. alphabitch said:

@Dr. Atomix: *cough* "A state that has no economic challenges"?! Are you fucking kidding me?

How 'bout figuring out how in the fuck you're going to heat your home through a -30–40ºF winter, when heating fuel (aka diesel fuel) is $5.00 a gallon in town, and $7.00+ a gallon out in the villages? Yeah, a hell of a lot of us are having some economic challenges over that one. Oh yeah, and electricity for a small house (as in 20' x 24' small) has gone from ~$65/month to ~$125/month in the last year or so … OH, yeah, and prices of everything for people out in the villages are going through the roof, since the bush pilots who fly everything out to them have to pay their fuel bills.

And yeah, I don't know of anyone getting any cost of living pay raises just recently either.

Funding for little things like low-income birth control subsidy programs, HIV education, alcohol and drug treatment programs, and all that other bleeding-heart-liberal stuff has gone down the toilet since the Republicans took over the governor's office 6 years ago.

Now, mind you, I'm not saying Sarah did all that much to improve any of our economic problems, but calling Alaska a state with "no economic challenges"?! Just because our problems aren't considered important enough by anyone down south to actually make the national news doesn't fucking mean they don't exist.

Oh, and the AK-47 thing? Yeah, I don't think Palin's in favor of legalizing private ownership of automatic weapons. But I'll get to the whole 'assault rifles and how anti-gun arguments fall apart at the seams because so few people in the anti-gun camp actually know anything about guns' issue in another post. It's in the works.

  27. alphabitch said:

@asnew2: I gotta say, when she was running for governor against Knowles, I thought she might not be that bad. Knowles, imo, was so sold out by that point, you could hardly tell him from a standard-issue Republican.

But yeah, she really didn't do half the shit she talked about during her campaign … "sell out" is a pretty apt description.

  28. Dr. Atomix said:

Alphabitch, you clearly did not take what I said literally - as it was intended. I said the state, not individuals within, has no economic issue. The oil income, budget surplus, etc., tell me there is no issue that would challenge a gov.

  29. Dr. Atomix said:

That would be "challenge a governer". Bush left Texas hobbled with $10 billion in debt, despite our strong economy. He cut taxes for the wealthy and the corporations. Something I suspect Palin might have started doing, but has been interupted to continue the disease on a national basis. Now, the AK-47 thing was a bit of an exaggeration. But my point is that she is all for guns & violence and no explanation about sex. Love is something that you have to develop after you marry the guy that knocked you up. I have SO had it with fucked up fundies that I may go postal yet.

  30. alphabitch said:

@Dr. Atomix: OK, granted that I over-generalized your comment … however, I've seen a lot of commentary bashing Palin for adding a $1200 fuel rebate to our permanent fund dividends this year, and from my perspective that was exactly the right thing to do with our little windfall of extra oil revenue taxes: Give it back to the people, so they can heat their homes for part of the winter (I have a 300 gallon heating oil tank … $1200 will fill it approximately once, and it needs to be filled at least twice a winter).

And yeah, the whole "pro-life" thing is rather grating, given that neither she nor her teenage daughter apparently know how to use birth control. hehe

  31. Dr. Atomix said:

There is using birth control and then there is "fucking like wild dogs". The Palin family seems to adopt the latter. Further to the point of handing back money, then adopting more debt: This is classicly stoopid public economic policy. "Let's give the little people a few sheckles so they vote me (or us) in again. Then we'll leave a huge, unsolvable deficit behind." My electric bill was $500 each of the last couple months, so don't expect too much sympathy on utilities or gas prices. We are ALL getting screwed on that. Speaking of which, a friend sent a photo of Joe B and the lovely Sarah (decked out in leather miniskirt) with a question: Who would YOU rather vote for? So my response was: "I guess I'd vote Republican, if I wanted to get fucked".

  32. alphabitch said:

@Dr. Atomix: Well here's the thing about the rebates … adopting more debt doesn't HAVE to be the corollary. And I'm firmly in the (rather socialist ;-) ) camp that says natural resources belong to the people, not whoever happens to harvest them first. Do oil, timber and mining companies deserve to get some profits back for the work they do in extracting and processing those resources? Sure they do. But I also think the people who live in the area the resources are being taken from deserve to get something back, while the corporation is profiting off their land's resources.

Rebate/deficit or balanced budget often does not have to be an either/or proposition, so let's not argue abstract concepts on the basis of a false dichotomy.

Geez, the least known of all the candiates is the one attacked the most. Exploring qualifications is valid, but the level of personal attacks is over the top. Obama has ties to radical socialists, convicted felons, associates under indictment (ACORN), but some of you care more that McCain didn't know how many houses he had? Are you kidding me?

  41. alphabitch said:

    Not to be Politically Incorrect:
Are you fucking kidding me?! The least known? Where have you been living for the last couple decades? Sitting at home masturbating to internet porn?! McCain has served for more than two DECADES in the Senate, you oblivious fuckwit. How the fuck does that equate with the phrase "least known of all the candidates"?!

Have you heard of the "Keating Five"? Or are you just too young for the words "Savings and Loan Crisis" to ring any bells? (Or maybe you're just too fucking catastrophically LAZY to do any research, because even Fox "Fuck the Facts, Ma'am" News doesn't try to imply McCain's an unknown…

And did you just not bother to click on the link about birth control funding? Or maybe you think presenting evidence about a candidate's knowledge of, and positions on various relevant issues isn't fair either?

I sure hope it's age/ignorance at fault, because in that case, you've still got a month to start doing your research and walk into your local polling place somewhat informed. Otherwise you're either so fucking inescapably, mind-bogglingly STUPID or just so fucking congenitally oblivious to reality, I'd just as soon your know-nothing ass stayed a few miles away from your nearest voting booth next month … and maybe four years after that for good measure.

Oh, and the "least known" of all the candidates? That would be McCain's running mate: Sarah "Same Speech, Different Lipstick" Palin. And she's becoming pretty frighteningly well known pretty fucking quickly.
